Georgia House votes to raise speed limits on urban interstates

ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) -

The Georgia House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bill Monday aimed at raising the speed limit on interstates in heavily populated areas of the state.

House Bill 774, which the House passed by a vote of 157-7, would allow the speed limit to be raised to 70 mph in metropolitan areas with populations of more than 50,000.

The bill now goes to the Senate.

Georgia Department of Transportation leaders have said the proposal wouldn't mean an automatic increase in speed limits. A traffic study is required before the speed limit can be raised, according to the sponsor, Rep. Sam Watson, R-Moultrie.

GDOT raised the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 mph on a nearly 30-mile portion of Interstate 285 late last year.
