Lake Region High vinyl ball to 'Rest in Pieces'

Posted: Updated:
POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - What started as a joke 16 years ago at Lake Region High School turned into a ball of inspiration for creativity.

On Wednesday, the students students held a 'Rest in Pieces' service for their symbol of pride.  To appreciate what happened at Lake Region High School Wednesday morning, you have to think outside the ball.

“It’s funny how something as ridiculous as this can become meaningful,” instructor Steven Chayt said.

What started as a baseball size collection of vinyl scraps in 1997 for their iMag program, snowballed into an icon for what the students strive for: imagination, creativity and pride for their skillset.

“People put their mess-up projects on the vinyl ball so it’s like ‘oh I remember when I did this for City of Eagle Lake or I remember when I did this for Publix,” junior Alaina Brown said.

A recent visit from local officials came with fatal news for the beloved ball.

“The Polk County Fire Marshals told us it was a potential fire hazard so we have to let go of the vinyl ball,” Brown said.

Letting go is never easy but these students chose to turn it into a Rest In Pieces ceremony of sorts.  Some taking the loss harder than others.  Some are still denying its fate.

“I wish they would make a big monument or something in the City of Winter Haven and put it in like a glass case.  I want it to be a part of history,” Hope Doherty said.
