Dead baby had 'cracked liver and fractured skull'

Posted: Updated:

An accused baby murderer remained hospitalized in critical condition Thursday night following an officer-involved shooting.

A DeKalb County deputy shot Nicholas Wade, 27, Wednesday afternoon outside of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church after the deputy said Wade first pointed a gun at him. Wade was wanted in the death of Keon Belk, 18 months old.

According to DeKalb County police reports, Wade was baby-sitting Keon, his girlfriend's child, Monday morning at a Lithonia home on Swift Street when Wade, "heard the baby making some noise, so he went to check on the baby and noticed he was not breathing very well."

Wade called 911. Paramedics found the child in cardiac arrest and rushed him to the hospital where he died. Doctors said he "had a cracked liver and fracture in his skull."

Wade has been jailed at least seven other times before this incident but never for anything as serious as murder.

Breyuna Shepherd is Wade's neighbor and has known him since the two attended high school together. She said the accusations shock her.

"He was a kind person, friends with everybody, class clown. And I would never think he'd be accused of murder. Never."

As of Thursday evening, detectives were still waiting on Wade's condition to improve in order to interview him.
