A Lawrenceville man is hospitalized with serious burns after a fire that gutted his home.
Firefighters responded to the Dogwood Lane home at 12:09 a.m. Friday. According to Capt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Fire Department, firefighters found heavy flames on the backside of the house. They entered the home, but immediately had to retreat when part of the structure collapsed.
It took about 25 minutes for firefighters to get the fire under control.
"There was an adult male occupant of the home who was transported to the hospital," Rutledge said. "He did have smoke inhalation and burn injuries."
Authorities have not released the name of the injured occupant or the extent of his injuries.
Two other adults, a mother and son, escaped the home unharmed. They told CBS Atlanta News that one of their dogs also escaped the fire, but three others did not survive.
"Right now, we're trying to determine exactly what may have caused the fire," said Rutledge. "We believe it to have originated in a back bedroom in the center of the home, but we don't know that for certain. Right now, that is part of the investigation."
