COLLEGE PARK, GA (CBS46) -

Students at a Fulton County school received nearly 100 visitors Friday with a special message…read more books.

Cartoon characters, community leaders and CBS Atlanta visited Love T. Nolan Elementary in College Park for the annual Pajama Read-a-Thon. It was sponsored by Hartsfield Jackson International Airport and Page Turners Make Great Learners, a non-profit designed to promote literacy in elementary students. CBS Atlanta's Jocelyn Connell is also a board member of Page Turners.

"Reading is the building blocks of life. Words, spoken and written, help connect classroom values to the real word," explained FeFe Handy, President of Page Turners.

Students were allowed to wear their pajamas to school while volunteers read them their favorite books. One volunteer, Andy Catarvo, has read to the kids for the past three years. He said he wants them to understand literacy opens doors. "I don't care what their background is, what their challenges are, honestly, they can overcome it with literacy."

"Literacy is a life skill. If you can't read and you can't write, you're not going to get very far. The whole purpose of this is to increase literacy, to develop a love of reading in our children," added Dr. Chandra Lemons, Love T. Nolan Principal.

The school has nearly 800 students.
