Father celebrates remission with daddy-daughter dance

A rite of passage for many girls, the daddy-daughter dance is a special night for all involved, but one father had to really fight to be there for his daughter's special night.

Jonathon Everett was diagnosed with acute prolimedic leukemia last August, on his 30th birthday.

"I wish I could say that I was one of those heroic people that was like, ‘Oh, you know, I'm going to fight this. I'm going to win,'" Everett said. "But honestly I didn't think I would make it."

He would have to undergo intense chemotherapy and even though Everett feared for his life, his 5-year-old daughter Lacey knew he would make it. How?

"Because, umm, he's great!" she said.

Everett is now in remission. On Friday, he attended Lacey's father-daughter dance, although he was afraid he would miss it.

"I had a picture of Lacey in my hospital room, and on the tough days, that's what got me through," he said. "Because that's what it's all about."

Now he says he makes sure to appreciate every day he's given.

"Every day I get to see her and the rest of my family is just – it is a blessing, and we take every day that we can right now."
