Judge Hatchett tells teen dating violence summit 'I was pressured to have sex as a teen'

The last thing Gabrielle Helton wanted to be doing Saturday morning is sitting in an auditorium at the Primerica Headquarters in Gwinnett County with 600 other teens.

"She told me, ‘mom you just don't get it'," said Charmagne Helton, Gabrielle's mother.

Gabrielle thought the 2014 Partnership Against Domestic Violence (PADV) Teen Summit would be boring; her mother brought her anyway.

After kicking things off with a bit of hip hop to get the teens' attention, Gabrielle was glad she came.

Judge Glenda Hatchett opened the teen's eyes with a very personal story. "When I was a teenager, there was a guy who kept pressuring me to have sex. I mean constantly," said Hatchett.

Hatchett has never shared that story before. She resisted the pressure and encouraged the young adults in the audience to do the same.

She also stressed that dating violence isn't just peer pressure or physical harm. "[It's] the emotional abuse of you are no good, you're not cute, you're overweight, nobody likes you and so your best bet is to be with me. And that's an abusive situation. It's control," said Hatchett.

The goal of today's summit was to get kids to realize whether it's a black eye or peer pressure, that kind of behavior should not be tolerated.

According to PADV, one in three teens will experience an abusive relationship. Georgia ranks No. 1 in teen dating violence.

"I don't care how fine he is. If he does not believe in your dreams and does not support you being empowered to get there, he's got to go," said Hatchett. For teens like Gabrielle, the message was heard loud and clear.

"If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have known any of these things were going on, or how serious of a problem this was, so I'm glad that I came."
