It has been a long 24 hours for the Georgia Army National Guard. We spent all of Wednesday embedded with teams as they hit the icy, snow packed streets of Metro Atlanta.
The guard have 150 Humvees in position across the state with 1,000 people responding to emergency calls.
CBS Atlanta News was with the Guard when they found a homeless camp off of Interstate 75 near Marietta. The homeless camp had clothes, that were solid ice, hanging on lines, and tarps that were frozen stiff. Soldiers rescued a 27-year-old homeless woman in the camp who was caught in the icy weather.
Other people in the camp were given food, warm clothes, and blankets.
Other teams were out on interstates searching for drivers who may be stranded in ditches or stuck in ice.
Teams will continue to monitor the area until the State of Emergency is lifted.
The Georgia State Defense Force, a volunteer group, was also helping the Guard search for people in need.
