Ice storm challenges florists for Valentine's Day

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

It may have gotten buried in this week's ice storm, but don't forget! Valentine's Day is Friday! Metro-Atlanta florists certainly have not.

"Just be patient. Give us a little leeway, and we'll get them there to you," said Todd Hausman, Manager at Peachtree Petals, located in Midtown Atlanta.

Hausman said they chauffeured staff in Thursday morning and hired extra employees, just to be ready in time for the most romantic holiday of the year. They even babysat the flowers overnight in case the power went out during the storm. That way staff would be available to rescue the flowers from harsh temperatures.

Drivers, like Ramia Hunter, said she will make her deliveries, but it will take extra time. "It's just getting off the exits, and of course, the neighborhoods are still kind of tricky."

Hausman said all deliveries placed by this past Tuesday would be delivered in time for Valentine's Day. However, he said they are not taking late orders. "We lost a day of delivery and because a lot of our employees couldn't make it into work, we lost a day of production."

Most Metro-Atlanta florists said they had reached their limits as well.

Hunter said the job may be challenging, especially this week, but it's worth it. "Women are so happy to get them (flower), especially when they're surprised, and they don't know it's coming; it feels great!"
