Thief steals Olympic medals from track star

DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

Angelo Taylor woke up to heartbreak Friday morning. Three of his championship medals, two from the Olympics, had been stolen.

"Sad day, you know I worked for them all my life," said Taylor.

Taylor competed in four Olympics and numerous World Championships. He runs the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400 meter relay.

Taylor said the medals were in a backpack he carries with him when he talks to school groups and teams. When he came home Thursday night he was tired and left the bag in his SUV in the driveway of his Decatur home. He said when he woke up Friday morning someone had gone through the vehicle.

"It was devastating," said Taylor.

He said the latch on the back of the SUV sometimes doesn't catch and fails to lock, and that's how the thief got into the SUV.

Taylor does not think the thief was targeting his medals. His box of medals that was in the backpack was put on the back seat. He thinks the three medals fell out into the bag. The thief likely used the bag to steal the laptop and other electronics that were in the vehicle, according to Taylor.

The medals that are now missing include the gold medal from his favorite race, the 2008 400-meter hurdles at the Olympics in Beijing. Also gone are the gold medal he won at the World Championship in 1999, and the silver he won at the 2012 London Olympics.

Taylor said he just wants the medals back - no questions asked.

"These are priceless. These are priceless to me. I worked hard. I earned it," said Taylor.
