Police in Marietta had to shut down a roughly three block-long stretch of Northwest Parkway on Friday, after discovering two bags full of methamphetamine ingredients. Police said the bags were left by a man whom they later arrested.

"Fortunately we have a very happy ending," said Officer David Baldwin of the Marietta Police Department. He emptied one of the bags on the ground, revealing hand lotion, ether, a cold pack, and lighter fluid.

"These chemicals, when mixed together, are extremely volatile. Sometimes the slightest little thing can really cause a horrific explosion."

The arrest and discovery was made after a business employee in the area noticed a man dropping the two bags into a bush by the side of the road. The witness called 911, and police, who were already in the area, stopped the man and took him into custody.

Several businesses in the area had to be evacuated while emergency responders evaluated the volatility of the ingredients. Baldwin said if the ingredients had been mixed, a hazmat team would have been needed to treat the area and make it safe again for traffic.
