Chamblee student with guns taken into custody

Posted: Updated:

Chamblee and Doraville police rushed to Chamblee Charter High School Tuesday afternoon. Armed with assault rifles and accompanied by police dogs, officers responded to a report of a gunman on campus.

"They stopped him and found him armed with two handguns. They were loaded," said Marc Johnson, the Chamblee city manager.

The school was locked down and the DeKalb County Bomb Squad was called to the scene to check three duffle bags the suspect said he left by the school's football stadium. Investigators said they found two rifles inside the bags.

"All of the weapons that were in the bags on the football field and the weapons the individual had on his person were actually taken from a burglary across the street from the high school," said Johnson.

Once police determined the students and teachers were not in any danger, the lockdown was called off and students were released from school. Police said it appears the suspect was trying to sell the guns at the school.

"We don't have any indication from him or otherwise that he had any intent to do anything at the school," Johnson said.

Investigators said the juvenile is a student at Chamblee Charter but has been suspended.
