Homeowner fired shot at burglary suspect

Posted: Updated:

During Christopher Dennis' first appearance before a DeKalb County Magistrate Court Judge, police said a homeowner who was getting burglarized fired one shot at Dennis who fled out the back door.

DeKalb County Police said Dennis is connected to at least two burglaries in the Kirkwood and Oakhurst areas.

In court, police said Dennis has an extensive criminal history. Dennis, 18, didn't say much to the judge as he sat in an orange jumpsuit with two other inmates. Police said Dennis stole electronics and a flat screen television during one of the burglaries. People who live in Kirkwood and surrounding areas came to Friday's hearing to make sure Dennis did not make bond.

"We don't want him out," Kortney Oster said. "He is a threat to our community. He has robbed people all over the place, Oakhurst and East Lake, we live right near there, so it is really scary."

The U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Dennis on Feb. 19. Police said he was asleep with a gun under his pillow. Dennis faces two felony burglary charges, and also a felony charge for receiving a stolen firearm.

"It is a blessing for all of us here to make sure they are all being caught and hopefully being prosecuted to the full extent of the law," said David McKenzie.

McKenzie lives and works in Kirkwood. He is well aware of the crime issues in the area.

"My wife a few years ago was jogging and it was later at night 7 p.m., it was dark in November, and she was accosted, dragged into the woods, strangled and they robbed her. It was basically a robbery, they took her phone, take her ring," said McKenzie.

McKenzie's wife survived. McKenzie is worried criminals are getting more bold and dangerous.

"Petty thievery and breaking into a house when someone is not home is one thing, but someone taking it to a level of shooting, that is very concerning," said McKenzie.

Dennis' next court case will be Mar. 21.
