NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The list of candidates running for Sheriff of New Hanover County is growing once again.

Jason Vaughn plans to join Marcus Benson as candidates for the GOP nomination. Both men worked in the department as part of their law enforcement experience.

Vaughn, who is currently an attorney in Wilmington, plans to file on Thursday, February 27.

Benson now works as a private investigator and as the host of Blue Line Radio on a local FM station.

Former Sheriff Sid Causey signed up on the first day of the candidate filing season February 10.

So did the current office holder, Sheriff Ed McMahon, who took over the office when Causey retired in 2009 and won a first full term the following year.

They will face each other in the Democratic primary on May 6.

The deadline for candidates to file is Friday, February 28 at noon.
