Former Atlanta arts center employee sentenced

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (AP) -

A former employee of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison and ordered to repay $1 million embezzled from the center.

U.S. District Judge Julie Carnes also ordered Friday that 42-year-old Ralph Clark of Ellenwood, Ga., spend three years on supervised release.

Clark pleaded guilty in April 2013. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates says Clark was director of facilities at Woodruff. She says he embezzled money by submitting invoices for bogus expenses to the art center's accounts payable department.

Some of the invoices were from his wife's cleaning business. Clark would pick up the checks for the payments and deposit them into accounts he controlled.

FBI agent Ricky Maxwell calls it "an unfortunate tale of betrayal and greed."
