Police officer and firefighter family loses everything in fire

Posted: Updated:

An officer with the Atlanta Police Department, her firefighter husband and their 8-year-old daughter lost everything in a recent apartment fire.

Officer Shawna Wiggins' family apartment on Tibarron Parkway in Smyrna went up in flames this past Sunday afternoon.

"I mean I'm speechless. I use to live there. We use to live there and now it's gone," said Shawn Wiggins. It really gives you more insight to what people go through. Usually I'm the one that's inside trying to put it out."

At the time of the fire, officer Wiggins and her daughter Shania, were first to escape from the fully engulfed burning building, and were able to alert other residents of the fire, ultimately saving many lives.

"When I opened my front door the whole, it was just smoke was just everywhere," said Shawna Wiggins. "She grabbed the dog and we both ran out in PJs with no shoes on. I had his flip-flops but she didn't have any shoes on."

Wiggins is part of the APD Mounted Patrol Unit.

Below is a link for PayPal that has been established to assist the Wiggins family during their time of need. If you would like to pay by check, please make your check payable to Shawna Wiggins and send it to the address below.

A PayPal account has been set up to help the family and donated clothing is currently being collected at the Atlanta Public Safety Building located at 226 Peachtree St. S.W.
