A fire broke out at Adopt A Greyhound Atlanta in Stone Mountain on Wednesday afternoon.
Flames and smoke shot through the roof of the building that houses rescue dogs on Annistown Road .
The group's director also lives on the property in a home adjacent to the shelter.
He saw the smoke and quickly pulled out two dogs that were in the shelter. Six other greyhounds were already safely outside.
"They acted pretty much normally," said director and caretaker Carl Viener. "I think they pretty much reacted more to me physically doing stuff so quickly and forcefully," he explained about how frantic the dogs were as the fire intensified.
Viener put the dogs in the organization's van while firefighters worked on controlling the flames. Investigators found a propane heater in the shelter building started the fire and called it accidental.
They said the building is a "total loss," with a gaping hole in the roof collapsing from water and smoke damage.
The fire stunned Viener, who told CBS 46 reporter Donna Rapado immediately after that he didn't really know what to do next. "Other than call the insurance company," he said. "I have volunteers that are ready to come and do whatever they need to do."
Three volunteers came to help Viener clean up debris around the property. They will also take some of the dogs home temporarily. Viener said 10 more rescues were supposed to be delivered the next day, Thursday. But that was canceled.
