Local school district feeling the effects of stomach bug

CARTERSVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

A stomach bug has been racing though the Cartersville City School District this week forcing a few hundred kids to say home from class.

Cartersville High School is one of the schools hit hard by a stomach virus.

The high school has 1,093 students.

Principal Steve Butler told CBS46 News that on Wednesday 110 students were sickened by the virus.

Those students either didn't go to school or went home early.

On Thursday that number decreased to 67.

CBS46 news confirmed that students at Cartersville Elementary School have also been bitten by the bug.

The Bartow County Health Department suspects it might be norovirus but said lab work hasn't been confirmed just yet.

"We've encouraged extra hand washing. We've been wiping down keyboards in our labs with Clorox wipes. Our custodial crew has been using extra disinfectant," said Steve Butler.

The bug seems to last a few hours or about a day.

The school district and health officials are encouraging anyone who is sick to stay home.
