Marietta Mayor Pro-Tem Johnny Walker, County Commissioner Joann Birrell, retired City of Marietta Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal Scott Tucker and 155 volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God participated in a day of cleaning and beautifying Marietta on Sunday.

The effort was initiated by the church to help clean the world on a global scale, including South Korea, Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa.

"It felt great to help clean up the creeks that flow into the Chattahoochee River and being able to work with the wonderful staff and volunteers of 'Keep Marietta Beautiful,'" said Hector Flores, church overseer for the WMSCOG.

According to a release from Keep Marietta Beautiful, the chuch was looked to for help improving the look and safety of Custer Park, Birney Park and the surrounding areas of the Marietta Power location in the creeks and drainage areas.

The volunteers removed litter and debris from three creeks, picked up litter from surrounding neighborhood streets and sidewalks and removed litter and debris from the creek area near Marietta Power.

"The City is grateful for their work to improve and beautify our City. The giving of their congregation's time and efforts is a mission that benefits the citizens of our City," Mayor Thunder Tumlin said.

Joan Ellars, director of "Keep Marietta Beautiful," said that members of the Church of God removed 4 tons of junk from the creeks and surroundings, including shopping carts that were left throughout the neighborhood, 55 tires and other miscellaneous household items.

According to Flores, the World Mission Society Church of God volunteers were overjoyed to share love with the people of Marietta and are looking forward to a continued partnership with the people of Marietta to make the city and the world a cleaner place.
