RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – Thom Tillis has lost his lead in the race to avoid a runoff in the Republican U.S. Senate primary in North Carolina, according to the latest survey done by Public Policy Polling.

The House Speaker had a 20/13 advantage over Greg Brannon in the crowded GOP field in February. But a survey of 884 registered voters from March 6th to 9th found Tillis and Brannon tied with 14 percent response when voters were asked who they would like to see as the Republican candidate in the fall. Heather Grant was the only other candidate in the field polling in double digits, with 11 percent. But 36 percent of responders said "someone else/not sure", meaning the field has potential "switchables" to win over before the primary election May 6th.

Incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan continues to lag in favorability with voters. Her approval/disapproval rating (41/50) remains the same from February to March, even though President Obama's numbers rose in March (42/55). Hagan has improved in the potential head-to-head races with GOP challengers. She now leads Tillis (45/43) and Grant (43/42) after trailing both by two points in the February PPP poll. Hagan and Brannon are deadlocked (43/43) after Brannon held an advantage (43/40) in last month's survey. Her largest deficit (45/43) is to Ted Alexander, who polled in a fourth-place tie with Mark Harris in the Republican field at 7 percent.
