Palmetto police searching for stolen race car

Posted: Updated:

Police in Palmetto are investigating the theft of a race car and trailer.

The car and trailer were stolen from a home on Roosevelt Highway and belonged to David Tatum III.

Located inside the white 1993 Gold Rush trailer bearing GA tag 4921VF, was a silver 1967 Chevrolet dragster-type race car.

Tatum has been buying, trading, and racing cars for nearly 25 years, the Chevrolet was his crowning achievement; a culmination of all his hard work.

"I knew it was bad," said Tatum when he realize what had happened. "All my stuff's gone and I have no clue where it went."

Palmetto police are investigating; they say the thieves could have connections to people who know Tatum.

Whomever they were, they were experts at getting into vehicles, according to the police.

A small hole just below the door handle shows how they were able to disengage the lock to get inside Tatum's truck.

Tatum doesn't know why they didn't just drive off at that point; instead they unhitched the trailer and pushed the truck out of the way.

Inside the trailer, Tatum had more than just his car; all of his gear, diagnostic equipment and spare parts were inside with the dragster.

The car itself has several racing type stickers on both sides. There were also three other vehicles that were broken into on the property.

If you have any information about the theft, please contact Sgt. Lee Gragg of the Palmetto Police Department at 770-463-9068.
