EXCLUSIVE: Robbery victim shot 14 times tells survival story

It was in January 2013, Melissa Burke had just returned home from a meeting at church.

"Had settled in for the evening and my doorbell rang. I ignored it the first time," said Burke. "I did look out the window and saw what appeared to be two teenagers."

Burke had no intentions of opening the door because she wasn't expecting company. Then it happened, the intruders kicked in her door and entered her Fairburn home on Estonian Drive.

"I hid in the closet and I prayed," said Burke. "I heard scurrying all over my home. Eventually the closet door where I was hiding swung open. I know I startled this boy because he went, 'Oh!'"

Burke was on her knees praying when the gunman found her.

"And one of my prayers was, 'God these are just things, let them take what they are going to take and just leave here and leave me be,'" Burke said.

For whatever reason Burke found herself staring in the face of someone who she believes could have been her grandchild. Someone intent on killing her.

"I believe his gun went off accidentally the first time then he just emptied his gun into me. He just kept shooting until he had no more bullets left in his gun," Burke said.

Like her attackers, Burke thought she would die, but after 12 months of rehabilitation, family support and through her faith she made a full recovery.

"I went from not being able to walk at all to depending on a walker, then a cane and then here I stand before you. God is great!"

Fulton County police have not made any arrests in Burke's case. If you have any information about it, call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS.
