State Senate lawmakers consider seasonal-worker bill

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Lawmakers in the Georgia State Senate could vote on a proposal to cut off unemployment benefits to 60,000 seasonal employees employed by private companies, including school bus drivers and cafeteria workers.

The bill's sponsor, State Rep. Mark Hamilton said many employers underpay their workers then encourage them to collect unemployment, forcing other companies paying into the system to subsidize those seasonal workers.

But seasonal workers said unemployment benefits are vital lifelines during lean summer months when they are out of work.

Public-school employees cannot collect unemployment during the summer months, neither should people who work for private companies, Hamilton said.
