Man who jumped from burning building arrested for arson

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authorities have arrested a man for arson after he lit an apartment complex on fire and jumped from the second floor Saturday morning

Israel Salazar, 36, set fire to his apartment in the building at 8665 E Speedway and then jumped from the second floor when authorities attempted to make contact with him, according to Tucson Police Department PIO Pete Dugan. 

The fire that started in his apartment spread to several apartments in the complex before Tucson Fire Department arrived on the scene and were able to extinguish it. All 18 units in the complex were damaged by fire or smoke, according to Tucson fire Department PIO Barrett Baker.

Arson investigators arrived on the scene, it was determined that Salazar started the fire. He was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail with 2 felony charges, one for arson and one for criminal damages over $10,000.

Red Cross is assisting people who have been temporary displaced by the fire, the number of people in need of assistance is not yet known.
