ELMORE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Hundreds of people gathered in Elmore on Saturday morning to mourn and pay their respects to Elmore police officer Jose "Andy" Chavez.

Officer Chavez was killed last Sunday, along with two others, when a man opened fire inside the Last Call Bar in Fremont.

There was hardly a dry eye in the house at Woodmore High School, as family, friends, and fellow officers reflected on what officer Chavez meant to their lives.

"We all still have to live, because Andy loved life," said Chavez' mother, Belinda Chavez.

With tears in her eyes, Chavez's mother described the pain of losing a second son.

"I lost my first one when he was four months old and now I lost Andy," said Ms. Chavez

A son, brother, husband, and father laid in the flag-draped coffin.

Chavez received full police honors.

His wife and young daughter sat front and center during the service.

"Andy was very, very proud of was his family. He talked about them all the time," said Chief George Hayes, of the Elmore Police Department.

Speakers said along with his contagious smile, Chavez's devotion and love for his wife and two young kids is what they'll remember the most about him.

Chavez was off-duty, celebrating his 26th birthday with cousins and friends the night he was shot.

Loved ones say Chavez died protecting and serving others, the same way he lived his life.

"Our faith says that death does not have the last word, and evil never really wins," said Chaplain Larry Vriezelaar

33-year-old Igmidio Mista has been charged with shooting and killing Chavez, along with his cousin, Daniel Ramirez, and bartender Ramiro Sanchez.

Mista is being held in the Sandusky County jail without bond.
