Posted: Updated:
SCOTT COUNTY, VA (WJHL) - Operation: "Shamrock Shakedown" - it's what Virginia officers are calling the latest indictment round-up to arrest more than than 70 people in southwest Virginia.

Monday several locals started their St. Patrick's Day in jail. Scott County deputies have investigated 71 people for more than a year and now combined they are facing 254 drug related charges. Investigators tell News Channel 11 a majority of the charges stem from prescription pill use.

"You always hope that you get the drug dealers and the users off the street.  It will be better for everybody, be a safer community," Scott County Sheriff John Puckett said. "But I just wish they would all quit doing drugs, all quit over medicating their self to where it would be a better place, a better community to live."

So far, 48 people have been arrested in the roundup.

We will update this story with mugshots and charges when it becomes available.
