Man once again accused of failing to deliver headstones

Posted: Updated:

Doug Holder gets choked up when talking about his aunt Lois who helped raise him. As the executor of her will, Holder is in charge of making sure she is properly buried.

"I have to see that it is done. On her headstone it says though mother to none, she was mother to many and that is the way it was," Holder said.

But after nearly a year, Holder said his aunt still hasn't been properly buried. Holder said he paid Fred Gambrell $4,200 for coping stones around the grave, gravel and seven large grave covers, but he said the job is half done and five of the seven headstones are missing.

"We started working with him March 21, 2013, and I noticed the stones were missing. The site was not finished November 8, 2013. I have called him a bunch of times and so has my sister," Holder said.

"It is disappointing that someone is capable of doing that to people," said Jackie.

Jackie didn't want to use her last name. She said she paid nearly $3,000 for two headstones and foot stones that still haven't been delivered nearly a year later. Since the fall of 2012, CBS 46 has been in contact with more than a dozen people who all tell a similar story. Jackie learned about Gambrell after seeing a CBS 46 story, but didn't recognize him until it was too late.

"We were standing in the cemetery discussing prices and I said we don't know you and you don't know us. And I said I sure hope you are not like the fella on the TV station and I sure hope they catch him. He said he was horrible and I hope they catch him too," Jackie said.

Gambrell is also accused of failing to put back headstones he moved while using his truck for deliveries. Holder said he has filed criminal charges against Gambrell, and other alleged victims are discussing doing the same. CBS 46 has tried to contact Gambrell repeatedly but so far have been unsuccessful.
