When I unveiled this year's dirty dozen on our CBS46 NCAA Tournament Preview Special, I got the expected responses: laughter, sly grins, and lots of head-shaking.
One week later, it's nothing but high-fives and fist-pumps and the question "how did you do this?"
The dirty dozen is the result of a formula I've devised over the past 16 years, compiling data from every regular season and NCAA tournament during that time.
These are the 12 teams that my math says will not win the NCAA championship this year. After just one week of play, nine of the 12 are already out of the tournament:
2014 Dirty Dozen | ||
Team | Seed | Result |
Florida |
#1 | ??? |
Wichita St. |
#1 | Lost in Round of 32 |
Villanova | #2 | Lost in Round of 32 |
Syracuse | #3 | Lost in Round of 32 |
Creighton | #3 | Lost in Round of 32 |
Duke | #3 | Lost in Round of 64 |
San Diego St. |
#4 | ??? |
VCU | #5 | Lost in Round of 64 |
Oklahoma | #5 | Lost in Round of 64 |
St. Louis |
#5 | Lost in Round of 32 |
Cincinnati | #5 | Lost in Round of 64 |
Baylor | #6 | ??? |
The results are even more staggering than last year, when two of the dirty dozen reached the Elite Eight before bowing out.
