Serial rapist sentenced in 1980s rape cases

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Constance Russell had sharp words for Daniel Wade, a convicted serial rapist who terrorized five women during the mid 1980's.

"Mr. Wade is a predator and he is exactly the sort of person who should never be on the streets," Russell said.

Wade faced six life sentences plus an additional 190 years behind bars. Russell sentenced him to six life terms plus a 140 years.

"The wheels of justice turn slow, but in this case they absolutely turned correctly," said Danny Anagan.

Retired Atlanta Police Lt. Danny Anagan worked the cases 28 years ago.

"This guy was an absolute predator. He victimized young people, he victimized people in the middle and older women. He was making no distinction of the age of the women or the vulnerability of the victims," Anagan said.

On Friday, jurors returned guilty verdicts against Daniel Wade, now 63, on charges of rape, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy, aggravated assault, cruelty to children, burglary and robbery by intimidation.

Prosecutors said Wade posed as a maintenance man to gain access to women's apartments along the Interstate 85 corridor.

In August 2007, Anagan brought the case to the Fulton county DA's Cold Case Unit and with the help of new DNA testing, Wade was identified. Prosecutors said Wade's DNA also links him to three other victims from DeKalb and Gwinnett counties.

"This case underscores the need for all police departments, Atlanta's included, to make sure to properly document when they are putting these cases together because you never know when it is going to come full circle. Things you did 25 years ago become important such as in this case," said Anagan. "We know this guy is not going to hurt anyone else out here trying to live a normal productive life because he is away from society where he needs to be."
