Atlanta police investigate third attempted abduction in a week

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta Public School officials will work closely with Atlanta police after another student was almost abducted near campus. This is the third incident in one week.

The latest happened Thursday morning on Fair Street near M. Agnes Jones Elementary.

Police said a boy walking to class was approached by someone in a blue van who tried coaxing him inside the vehicle. That child got away.

Parents want the district to do more in preventing this from happening.

"The first thing they need to do is to give these kids a better bus route because the bus stops are too far away from home," said Victoria Williams, whose child attends Jones Elementary.

The first attempted abduction happened Monday morning. Police say a man in a gray minivan tried getting a 17-year-old girl into his vehicle while she walked to Booker T. Washington High School in Southwest Atlanta.

Police said, like in Thursday's incident, the suspect in Monday's attempted abduction told the victim her parents sent for her.

"It's important for parents to be speaking with their kids, make them aware of who they're allowed to go with," said Officer John Chafee with the Atlanta Police Department. "Just so if a situation like this comes up that the children aren't gonna be wondering if this person's telling the truth. They're going to be able to trust what their parents told them above what this person told them."

On Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl told police a man drove up to her trying to get her to go with him. She was just outside Crawford Long Middle School. She ran to school administrators who then called 911.

APS officials released a statement Thursday saying they're working closely with police and have "made the decision to launch a safety campaign targeted toward student walkers and bus riders."

The district plans to distribute letters to parents including safety tips and produce radio and television public service announcements.
