Cobb Commissioners voted to change names of roads around Six Flags

COBB COUNTY (CBS46) -

Cobb County Commissioners voted Tuesday on a plan to rename four of five roads that bear the name of the popular amusement park, Six Flags over Georgia.

"This area has been a challenge for the county," said Dana Johnson, deputy director of the Cobb County Community Development Agency.

Johnson said community leaders and residents in South Cobb have worked together to develop a plan to reduce confusion among motorists and help rebrand the area.

According to the plan, the portion of Six Flags Drive east of Blair Bridge Road will be renamed Riverside Parkway. The eastern portion of Six Flags Drive will be renamed Cityview Drive and Six Flags Way will be renamed Harbor Way.

Currently, there are two roads named Six Flags Parkway. The plan calls for the Six Flags Parkway that leads to the amusement park to keep its name while the other branch will be renamed Premier Lane.

"I think it'll be a good plus for us because it'll cut down on confusion," said Thomas Lovelace who owns Mr. T's Hair Design on Six Flags Drive. He said it is tough giving directions to customers because of the series of similarly-named roads.

Some officials suggested that changing the names of the roads may help the area shed its high-crime reputation and spur additional development in the area.

Johnson said the cost of changing the road names will be minimal as most will be covered by SPLOST funds already approved by taxpayers.
