MACON, GA (CBS46) -

The Mercer University men's basketball team returned Monday from their trip to the NCAA tournament, following a loss Sunday night to Tennessee.

The defeat did not dampen the spirits of students and fans, who gathered to welcome the team off the bus after their trip back from North Carolina.

"It's put Mercer on the national map, and we're grateful for that," said longtime professor Walter Shurden.

"It still doesn't even feel real, honestly," said Daniel Coursey, a senior on the Mercer team.

"People were saying on Twitter that Mercer was the No. 1 hit on Google on Friday," said Coursey. "And the admissions page crashed. It's huge, finally put Mercer on the map."

The national spotlight turned on Mercer Friday afternoon, following their improbable victory over heavily-favored Duke. Mercer had never won a game in the NCAA tournament before that day.

"This is the best thing that could have happened," said Coursey. "All the people that came to the game last night, and Friday? Unbelievable."
