DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A 6-year-old child is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in DeKalb County.

According to DeKalb County police, the child tried to cross Hambrick Road at Central Drive where a crossing guard was on duty.

Police said the child was on the opposite side of the street from the school crossing guard and traffic on Hambrick Road was traveling on a green light.

The school crossing guard began to enter the intersection to stop traffic. The child, anticipating the crossing, stepped into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle before the crossing guard had fully entered the roadway, stopped traffic and signaled for the child to cross.

The child was with a guardian at the time of the accident. He was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egelston in critical condition.

The driver remained on the scene and at this time no charges are anticipated.

DeKalb County police are investigating.
