High school booster club raffles gun to raise money for baseball team

Posted: Updated:

A Chapel Hill High School parent booster club is raising money for its baseball team by holding a raffle, and one of the items will require a background check for the winner to take it home. A Glock handgun is the prize awaiting whoever wins the drawing, and parents involved with the raffle seem at ease with the notion of raising money by selling a weapon.

"We just thought we'd use that as one of the items," said one parent, who did not want to be identified. "At no time will there be a gun on this campus. The actual raffle will be held off campus."

The gun was gifted to the booster program to be sold in the raffle. Whoever ends up with the weapon will have to use a certificate to retrieve the weapon from an authorized dealer, and will need to have a federal firearms license and pass a background check.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department said they signed off on the raffle, and are comfortable with how parents are raising money for the baseball team. The school district said they don't exert any authority over parent and booster club functions, though the Chapel Hill High School baseball coach is hosting the raffle, according to one parent.

"I think it's a good thing for the program to raise the money," said the parent.
