ATLANTA (CBS46) -

During a news conference Thursday at Hope Hill Elementary School, the Atlanta Board of Education announced Dr. Meria Joel Carstarphen as the sole finalist to become the superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools.

Over the next few days in a series of school visits and public forums, she will meet with students, parents, employees, partners, elected officials and community members.

The board will then vote on Dr. Carstarphen's official appointment at its April 14, 2014, regular meeting.

Dr. Carstarphen possesses nearly 20 years of experience in urban public school systems.

Currently, she serves as the superintendent of the Austin Independent School District, which she joined in 2009 as its first African American and first female superintendent.

She served previously as the superintendent of Saint Paul Public Schools in Minnesota. Her hometown is Selma, Alabama, where she began her career in education as a middle school teacher.
