Newnan family suffers double tragedy

Posted: Updated:

A Newnan family is dealing with not just one tragedy, but two.

Madeline McTier, 17, died in September due to complications from a brain tumor. She was a popular cheerleader at East Coweta High School.

Eleven days ago Madeline's 20-year-old brother, Mitchell McTier, was in a snow-skiing accident while on spring break in Colorado.

"We're looking at him possibly dying; we're looking at him possibly being paralyzed from the neck down," said Mike Murphy, the children's step-grandfather.

Mitchell hit a tree, suffering traumatic brain injury, two broken vertebrae, and a right ear nearly torn off. Doctors in Colorado told his family he'd likely be in their hospital for two to three months.

"I thought, ‘Oh no, here we go again,'" said Murphy.

Then, this week, Murphy said a miracle happened.

"He (Mitchell) walked down the aisles of St. Anthony Hospital by himself. He wasn't aided by anybody," Murphy said.

In fact, Mitchell is doing so well he was flown back to Georgia from Colorado Thursday. He'll continue his recovery at the Shepherd Center.

Murphy said Mitchell's healing has helped restore the family's faith following Madeline's passing. He said while they continue to mourn her death, they celebrate Mitchell's life.

"Why did this have to happen to Madeline? But today I'm asking, how did Mitchell come through this like he has? ... we don't always understand it, but God has a plan."
