Church congregation mourns death of longtime pastor in accident

ROME, GA (CBS46) -

There were plenty of tears and sorrow at Thankful Baptist Church in Rome Monday as a close-knit congregation grieved the loss of its longtime pastor Nim B. Russell.

"No matter when I called him he was there. Whether it was by text or it was I need to see you, he was there. So the thing is now who do I go to," said Yolunda Hambrick.

The Georgia State Patrol said a pickup truck driven by 47-year-old Michelle Blum crossed the center line near Big Oak Tree Rd West of Adairsville and hit the car carrying Nim Russell and his wife Julia.
Nim Russell died in the accident, his wife was seriously hurt and rushed to the hospital.

"Right now we are really grieving and have really been given a shot. We didn't expect this to happen, in fact we were just ministering to our pastor yesterday," said Carlton Gibson.

Friends said Nim Russell was a man who cared about both his blood and spiritual families.

"He loved his wife dearly. He had two daughters that he loved dearly, a son he loved dearly and those grand babies. He really loved those grand babies. He really was a family person," said Gibson.

Despite their pain, friends said they know Nim Russell is in a better place and because of his teachings they will survive.

"He was an awesome, awesome vessel for the Lord," said Gibson.
