JCSO investigating fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:

Jasper County Sheriff's Office and The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred on Henry Lawton Road Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Jasper County Coroner, the victim is 23- year-old Curtis Scott, of Ridgeland.

The sheriff's office is releasing very little information. Witnesses said Scott was standing in his great grandmothers yard with his 2-year-old son and girlfriend when he was shot.

"It's hurting me real bad," said Scott's cousin, Cathy Chaneyfield. "It makes me want to go to war. I got too much anger in me right now. I can't even cry right now.

Henry Lawton Road was closed off for several hours while the sheriff's deputies and SLED investigated, and family and friends stood and watched – in shock.

Many out there said, "enough is enough." They want the "senseless" murders need to end.

"It's so so sad because, I mean it seems like this has been going on once every month," said Scott's aunt, Lahoma Scott. "It's sad, because these are young black men."

She says she's used to seeing scene likes this on the news, but she never thought one of her family members would be the next victim.

"It's sad," said Lahoma Scott. "There's a lot of unsolved crimes.  Hopefully this one gets solved, because we're losing too many young folks."

The Sheriff's Office is still investigating the shooting.
