COWETA COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Coweta County Fire Department said a father and his daughter would have almost certainly passed away from smoke inhalation Sunday night, had it not been for the quick-thinking and selfless actions of a Good Samaritan.

Mike Burgess was at the scene of an accident as it happened Sunday evening, at the intersection of Highway 54 and 34 in Coweta County. According to the Georgia State Patrol, one of the cars involved in that head-on collision was a '62 Porsche. The Porsche burst into flames, and Burgess ran straight for it.

When he got closer, he saw a man inside.

"I managed to get the door open enough to grab him, and you could tell he was in bad shape," said Burgess. "He said 'my daughter is in there,' and after he said that, I laid him down fairly quickly, to the point where I almost dropped him."

Even though the car was engulfed in smoke, Burgess ran back and rescued the young woman from the passenger seat.

"I just kept telling myself, you can't leave her," he said. "I'd like to think I did what any normal person would have done."

The Coweta County Fire Department said they plan to formally honor Burgess for his efforts.
