Firefighters say long driveway at mansion would not allow for enough fire engines

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters who battled a fire at a Buckhead mansion said there was not enough room to get the number of engines needed into the home's long driveway.

"I think it was quite a spectacle and I don't know what took so long (to put the fire out)" said Barbara Montgomery, a neighbor.

The Atlanta Fire Department said it used two hydrants to fight the fire. The home at 2789 Habersham is so large it stretches an entire block. Fire officials said the hydrants used were inspected in September and October of last year and revealed no problems.

"I'm not worried about the number of hydrants. I think we have plenty of water," said Montgomery.

A spokesperson with the fire department was unsure whether the home contained a home sprinkler system and said such a system would have been the only thing which would have saved a home built of mostly wood.

Officials still do not know what started the fire.

They say any Atlanta homeowner can request a drill where the fire department will come out and ensure the number of needed engines will fit on their property or on their street.

"It's a shame. I don't know what happened that it couldn't be saved sooner. I'd like to know the full story," said Montgomery.
