COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Cobb County police are investigating a fatal crash that happened Saturday night.

The crash happened in Austell near I-20 eastbound, just east of Factory Shoals Road.

According to investigators, a green 1994 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on I-20 in the left-most travel lane and for reasons unknown failed to maintain his lane of travel. The Ford struck a 2006 International truck which was traveling in the next lane. The impact forced the Ford towards the concrete jersey wall. The driver of the Ford then steered to the right, redirecting the vehicle to travel in a southeasterly direction across the eastbound travel lanes.

As the Ford continued, the driver steered to the left, causing the vehicle to begin a counter-clockwise spin. The vehicle tripped, became airborne and began to flip end over end, coming to a final uncontrolled rest on its roof against the concrete jersey wall. The driver of the Ford was ejected during this collision sequence.

The driver of the 1994 Ford Explorer has been identified as 51-year-old Tommy L. Pierson, of Lawrenceville, GA. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital by ground ambulance but died as a result of the injuries he received in the collision.

The driver of the 2006 International truck has been identified as 23-year-old James R. Carver, of Marietta, GA. Mr. Carver did not sustain any injuries in this crash.

A passenger in the International, identified as 29-year-old Richard N. Malphurs, of Marietta, also did not sustain any injuries in this collision.

The collision remains under investigation and no charges will be filed when the investigation is complete.
