SUV stalls in rising water, gets stuck

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Donna Thomasson was walking in the rain with her dog when she stumbled upon something she said she had never seen before.

"Well this is just crazy. It is just crazy that this is going on here on this street. That car is deep in the water," said Thomasson.

Witnesses said the driver of the SUV got in over his head pretty quickly and his vehicle got stuck in water that rose up to the rearview mirrors.

"I saw the gentleman who was in there, he had like four small dogs and made the mistake of opening up the back door and all the water rushed in. I offered him help, but he said he was alright and he sat here in the rain," said Peter Langston.

Monday's storm caused problems around metro Atlanta. The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for several creeks in DeKalb, Forsyth, Gwinnett and Fulton counties, including Peachtree Creek. People who live around the creek said the flooding is something they don't like but are used to.

"It takes probably two hours once it starts to rise from the river for it to make it up to our yard, but once it makes it over kind of like that bank over there, it is a free-for-all whatever the rain does," said Langston.

"My house is not in a flood zone but for those people who have those houses, I am sure it is very frustrating. We will be thinking about them," said Thomasson.

Judging by how high the water was around the SUV, it is likely totaled. Thomasson said it is a tough lesson the driver learned.

"Often times people think the water is not quite as deep as it actually is, so it is hard to estimate. Any time I approach water standing, I go a different route," Thomasson said.
