SCAD's parking lot living experiment

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Savannah College of Art and Design or SCAD unveiled a "micro" experiment Wednesday afternoon.

It has modified a parking garage deck near its Atlanta campus for a living space called SCADpad. Each apartment is the size of a parking space. The pads also include sustainability features, including gray water gardens, and innovative design technology, including Smart Glass and 3D printed interior features.

School officials say this experiment will create a new solution to address urban housing needs and adaptive reuse of dormant structures, like parking garages.

"These are prototypes. In the planning it's an experiment to learn how people can live in smaller places in the 21st century," said School of Design Dean Victor Ermoli.

"In our analysis, if this unit, based on what we've learned, gets massed produced it's price range on the low range would probably be about $40,000," said Ermoli.

This spring, SCAD students will move into the units and document their experiences.
