BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A year-long, multi-agency investigation resulted in the indictment of 28 people who allegedly participated in organized criminal activity. The indictment covers activity from 2007-2014, including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, burglary, and narcotics trafficking.

Law enforcement officers from the Baton Rouge Police Department, East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, the Louisiana State Police, the U.S. Marshal's Office, and the Administration of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, began executing warrants after the indictments were issued during the late evening on Wednesday, April 8.  Those individuals were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

"We are not playing around…we mean what we said and we are going to live up to those promises," Chief Carl Dabadie, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. "All law enforcement agencies in the Baton Rouge-area are committed to this project and are working together to stop the senseless violence that has become too common in our city."

Officials say all of the individuals arrested are connected to the infamous "Big Money Block Boyz" group, which is a criminal organization based out of the Gardere area.

"Members of the Big Money Block Boyz, including some who were arrested today, were present at the April, 2013 call-in," said District Attorney Hillar Moore. "At the call-in we told each group that the violence must stop, and the next person to commit a homicide would make his entire group a target. The Big Money Block Boyz did not listen to our message, and today we are fulfilling the promise we made to them and the entire parish of East Baton Rouge."

District Attorney Hillar Moore stopped short of calling the group a gang.

"The gang you're gonna really know with particular tattoos and colors, and you're not getting out of the gang. If you get out of the gang, you're dead," Moore said. "Groups like we have here are more amorphous and people change and come and go. You're with a group one day, you're not with a group the next day."

The Gardere Initiative is a community organization made up of neighborhood leaders and religious organizations. Vice President Jeremy Blunt said while he's happy to see a pro-active approach from law enforcement, no one really wins.

"Part of the reason why we have the Gardere Initiative is to help the community, to reach out to those (who were arrested), so when anything of this nature happens, it doesn't bring a joy to us at all," Blunt said.

The Gardere Initiative aims to make the community safer for children growing up in the area.

"We are excited about the opportunities that the children will have because of this and also the lessons that they may learn out of this. That's what our hope is, that this is a lesson learned. You don't do the wrong thing and expect a positive outcome," Blunt said.
