Mother, daughter die in Avondale Estates house fire

Firefighters said a mother and daughter died in a house fire on Lakeshore Drive in Avondale Estates on Saturday.

"First we heard popping noises like fire crackers were going off and we heard some sirens," said Denise Forrester, a neighbor.

Tami Willadsen, 43, and the daughter as Jess Willadsen, 10, both died in the fire. Friends said the father, Dave Willadsen, and the son, Jack Willadsen, 10, made it out of the home alive.

"They just moved in maybe six weeks ago, and I was planning to meet them maybe within the next week or so," said Forrester.

The fire department said there were several people at the home at the time of the fire.

"Both houses on both sides of the house [were engulfed] in fire," said Capt. Eric Jackson with DeKalb County Fire and Rescue.

Jackson said the fire was so intense, nearby homes were damaged. He said paint melted on five cars nearby and the tops of trees 70 to 80 feet high caught fire.

"We opened the door to look outside and we live a block up the street, and we could see ashes coming over the trees," said Forrester.

The Nature Conservancy in Georgia said it named Tami Willadsen the director of philanthropy in November.

Dave Willadsen sustained minor injuries. Jack is listed in critical condition.
