Woman charged with hit-and-run in Gwinnett County

NORCROSS, GA (CBS46) -

A woman has been charged with hit-and-run in Gwinnett County.

According to a spokesperson with Gwinnett County police, 50-year-old Ruth Escobar was driving a 1999 Ford F-150 on Kings Ridge Drive in Norcross when she hit a pedestrian while making a turn on Singleton Road.

A witness said Escobar failed to stop at a stop sign, and hit the pedestrian while the individual was crossing the road, according to authorities.

The witness said Escobar did not stop to render aid, but drove off, according to police.

A witness followed Escobar into an apartment complex in Norcross, where she was eventually taken into custody by authorities.

The pedestrian, 85-year-old Kanaiyalal Patel, was taken to the hospital and later died.

Escobar has been charged with vehicular homicide, hit and run, failure to obey a stop sign and driving without a valid drivers license.
