Atlanta community leaders held a news conference Tuesday to announce a reward and to call for a meeting with various police agencies to talk about child safety in the wake of several attempted child abductions.

Citing memories from Atlanta's "Missing and Murdered Children Days" in the late 1970s and early 80s, civic leaders and clergy want to bring attention to the 11 recent attempts to grab children.

"What we said after living through that experience was will we idly sit by to allow something like that to happen in our city," said Michael Langford.

On March 31, 2014, Willie Myrick, 9, was kidnapped from his southwest Atlanta home and driven around in a car with his abductor for nearly three hours before the abductor dropped him off in East Point.

Michael Langford along with his late brother, Sen. Arthur Langford, organized the original searches for Atlanta's "Missing and Murdered Children."

"In 1979, children from all across Atlanta were picked up off the streets, just like this 9-year-old boy was two weeks ago. Atlanta was slow to react. There have been at least nine attempts to grab children walking to school or either just going about their business, as a community and a city we cannot wait till a child is harmed or found dead to react, we must do something now," said Langford.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the recent kidnapping. The suspect was identified as mid- to late 20s with long to medium length dreadlocks, and a tattoo on the bicep area of his arm.

He was driving a silver or gray Honda Civic or Accord with no carpet in the floor board.

Community activists will have a mass meeting on Thursday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. It's located at 2755 Campbellton Rd in Southwest Atlanta. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
