Restaurant Report Card: Panaderia Elizabeth & Atmosphere

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

CBS46 uncovered a serious health risk inside one Gwinnett County restaurant this week.

Panaderia Elizabeth Restaurant at 5050 Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross failed with 47 points and a "U" for unsatisfactory and just three days later they failed again with 61 points and a "U." Inspectors found cooked chicken, black beans and beef stew at unsafe temperatures. Plus, employees were not washing their hands properly and several ants were seen in the facility.

"You can check all around and you're not going to see one ant," Panaderia Elizabeth Owner Freddie Sosa said.

The health department temporarily suspended food service at Panaderia Elizabeth Restaurant until they cleaned up their act, but we still found a problem in the kitchen soon after they reopened.

"One of the violations was that the backdoor was open and it's still open," CBS46's Adam Murphy said to Sosa.

The back door was wide open which could create a pest problem. Panaderia Elizabeth is waiting on a re-inspection.

Also in Gwinnett County, Atmosphere at 540 Athens Highway in Loganville failed with 66 points and a "U." The report says an employee picked up raw chicken wings and did not wash his hands properly. Plus, raw ground beef was being thawed improperly and chili, meatloaf and hotdogs were past their expiration date in the cooler.

"Were you guys serving expired food to customers?" Murphy asked.

"No, basically what happened we had someone new who was working on shift who wasn't completely trained," Atmosphere Manager Ian Edwards said.

Atmosphere corrected all critical violations and picked up an 'A' on a re-inspection.

"Is it safe to eat here?" Murphy asked.

"Yeah, it's very safe to eat here," Edwards said.

There were several good scores around metro Atlanta this week. In Clayton County, American Deli at 6401 Highway 85 in Riverdale scored 90 points and an "A." In Fulton County, Metro Fresh at 931 Monroe Drive in Atlanta picked up a 96 and an "A" and in Douglas County, Folks Southern Kitchen at 6912 Douglas Boulevard in Douglasville received 99 points and an "A." Last but not least, Table & Main at 1028 Canton St. in Roswell received five 100's in a row and was the featured restaurant of the week.
