Tree crushes car, narrowly misses northwest Atlanta home

Posted: Updated:

If you take a look at the front yard of Joe Dowell's home, you may understand why he feels blessed. A massive tree across the street from his home came feet, if not inches, away from seriously damaging his home.

"It just knocked my rail down, it didn't touch my house whatsoever. We slept through the whole thing, so it worked out really well for us," said Dowell.

Workers with the city of Atlanta said the downed tree at Spring Avenue and Mallard Street was the third downed tree across a road they dealt with Tuesday afternoon. It is also not the first time a tree has threatened Dowell's home.

"This is the second tree that fell. The first one fell right down here, straight down the house, so like I said, we fared pretty well," said Dowell.
Dowell's neighbor wasn't so lucky. The tree destroyed her SUV.

"It didn't look like it faired too well, so I'm sure she has something to take care of," said Dowell.

Experts say Georgia's soft clay, recent rain and heavy wind add up to more downed trees in the days and weeks ahead. Dowell said it's a reality he's prepared to deal with.
"It is always a concern, especially with Georgia filled with so many trees, but we enjoy the shade also in the summer time, so it is something you just have to live with," said Dowell.
