Man rapes woman in her home - Athens police release his sketch

Posted: Updated:

Police in Athens have released the sketch of a rapist, and they need the public's help finding him.

Police say the man knocked on a woman's door in the middle of the night on April 11. When the woman answered the door he pushed his way into the home and raped her.

"We encourage people, if you don't know who's on the other side particularly at odd hours or when you're not expecting guests," advised Major Mark Sizemore of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. "It's wise to install peepholes when you don't have windows."

"I always double lock my car and house doors. I try to always be aware of who's around me," Jackie Brew of Athens told CBS46 reporter Donna Rapado. "It's very concerning especially knowing we have so many young women of college age," Brewer said about knowing a rapist is somewhere out there.

Major Sizemore pointed out people are often more relaxed in their homes. "You must always be vigilant whether at home, parking decks or jogging trails," he said.

Police urged anyone who recognizes the man in the sketch to call Crime Stoppers. They're offering a reward of up to $1,000.
